Good mileage small car to occasionally tow 600 lbs?

I'd like to get rid of my full sized pickup V-8, (15mpg at best,) and get a small comuter car or SUV, cheap to run, that is still able to pull a little trailer with 10 bags of cement or 10 sheets of plywood just once in a while - Any experience with this ? Any 4-cylinders that would do it?
