What happens with the money after checks become void?

Absolutely NOTHING happens to the money. When you WRITE a check, the money stays in the account until it is cashed. If it is never cashed, the money never moves. Most REPUTABLE companies will replace a stale check with little hle. If you have to fight, don't bother unless it is worth taking them to court.
